If you’re trying to eat better and still enjoy non-vegan foods, then making simple swaps like this is the easiest way to do so. We already know that hot dogs are both fun and easy to make, especially for a BBQ or to get kids more involved in cooking at home. These are an easy swap from meat-based sausages but taste just as good! For a fraction of the price and in only ten minutes, these will hit that sweet junk food craving.
Here we used Heck super green vegan sausages, which are made from quinoa, kale, spinach, and ginger. I also like Linda McCartney ones, available from most supermarkets. Even the local Costcutter near me sells them, so they shouldn’t be too hard to find!
I used crispy onion bits (often accidentally vegan- check the packet), American mustard (again, check the bottle!) and tomato ketchup. You could add things like:
Basic ingredients:
Hot dog rolls
Vegan sausages
Topping ideas:
Crispy onion
Ketchup
Mustard
Vegan cheese
Gherkins/ pickles
Sauerkraut
Avocado/ guac
Coleslaw
Vegan mayo
Salsa
Refried beans
Fresh chilis
Fresh herbs
Hot sauce
Caramelised onions
Apple chutney
Crumbled crisps
Method:
- In a large frying pan, add some oil and fry some red onion alongside the sausages
- Slice the hot dog buns straight through the middle, being careful not to cut all the way to the bottom
- Once the sausages and onion are cooked through, move them to one side of the pan and lightly toast the hot dog buns in the pan
- Be careful not to burn them!
- Take everything off the heat, assemble with your favourite toppings, and eat!
